A traffic stop in Wilmington led to a driver’s arrest first for marijuana, then an illegal gun, city police said Wednesday.

When detectives stopped the car of Allen Freeman, 26, of Chester, Pennsylvania, shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday near Ninth and Lombard streets, they saw a small amount of marijuana in plain view, Sgt. Andrea Janvier said.

Freeman and his vehicle then were taken to city police headquarters, she said. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, and police found a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver holding six rounds, she said.

Freeman was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, firearm possession by a prohibited person and weapon possession in a designated Safe School Zone.

The past offense that led to his being banned from gun possession was not disclosed.

Bail information was not immediately available.
