Online or print or both? Thanks for reading

The News Journal
The author's dad tries to read The News Journal and eat while Bruce the cat invades his space in the 1980s. He is still a print reader of The News Journal.

Are you reading this on your desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone?

If you are reading this online, you are my mom. You've figured out that you can't wait for the newspaper and want to read things as they happen. You've also come to enjoy the extras that come with online. Extras like videos, photo galleries and searchable data.

You like to comment with other readers and share stories on Facebook and Twitter. You like to see what other people think.

If you came here only because you read it in print first and I suggested you check it out, you're a print reader mostly.

You were probably sitting in your recliner or maybe at your desk at work and you had the page flipped over and folded so it's easier to hold. Or maybe you were sitting at your kitchen table or on your back porch and the paper was open on the table, a cup of coffee beside it and maybe a bowl of cereal or a toasted bagel with some cream cheese.

Or maybe you were sitting ... I think I'll stop right there with the guessing where you could have been sitting and reading the paper.

You my fine readers, are my pops. He reads my column in the paper. He reads everything else The News Journal does in the paper. He reads Jeff Montgomery's environmental pieces, Esteban Parra's varied work on what's breaking in Delaware and Martin Frank's coverage of the Eagles all in the print edition. I'll even bet he reads Patricia Talorico's Second Helpings column and restaurant reviews. We Gentrys like food.

Pops then cuts out my column, cuts out helpful articles with tax and retirement tips and cuts out things to save for my brothers if he thinks they may want them. He even calls me to report mistakes in the printed paper – something he takes great pleasure in.

I can see it both ways. I'm a big print fan. I love reading the paper, holding it, saving what I want to out of it and using the rest to get the charcoal started in the grill.

But I admit, there are a lot of fun extras on our website. For my columns, I often put related links and videos – I even had one of Toby the Jack Russell "swimming" around on the floor while on vacation a few years ago. All of the reporters and columnists here do the same.

So even if you're a big fan of print and prefer to read the paper that way, check out some of the extras we give you online while you're here, including a video looking back at my summer of 2008, links to our new Philadelphia Eagles app, a map where you can help us pinpoint what smells are coming from where in Wilmington and much, much, more.

If you're normally a digital reader, I hope you've gotten a chance to see these latest online offerings.

But most of all, no matter which way you choose to read The News Journal, the paper like Pops or digital like my mom, thank you for turning to us.
