More than 1,000 animals found a new home this weekend, thanks to a "mega" adoption event held by the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

The event, held Saturday and Sunday at Bellevue State Park, placed 1,134 homeless animals with families. More than 7,000 people attended, looking to take home a new furry friend.

That number eclipses Brandywine Valley's first "mega" adoption, which was held in Philadelphia in December 2016, and placed 886 animals in three days. The SPCA had a goal of 800 adoptions.

“Our objective with an event of this scale is to attract adopters who might not otherwise consider a rescued pet,” said Adam Lamb, Brandywine Valley SPCA's CEO. “The response from the community was phenomenal.”

The event was partially funded by a grant from the Petco Foundation.

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is the first open admission shelter in Pennsylvania to achieve No Kill status and serves as the only open admission shelter in both Chester and Delaware counties.
