Police ID man charged with killing Dover woman at nearby motel

Dover police say 21-year-old Darren Weiford fatally shot 20-year-old Amber Buckler inside a city motel room Thursday morning.

Weiford was arrested at the scene and has been charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is being held at Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna on $1,180,000 cash bail.

The shooting incident, believed to be "an isolated incident that is possibly domestic related," occurred at the First State Inn Motel at 1760 N. Du Pont Highway, said Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman, a spokesman with the police department.

Officers responded to the motel just before 11:30 a.m., he said.

Buckler was found with a single gunshot wound to the upper torso, Hoffman said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
