A crash involving an unmarked police car shut down traffic on northbound U.S. 13 under the Interstate 295 overpass, an official with the state traffic management center said. The crash involved an unmarked police car and a dump truck, according to county police.

"We are investigating a crash involving a police vehicle with injuries," said Officer First Class JP Piser with the New Castle County Police Department.

All northbound lanes on U.S. 13 have since reopened, according to police.

Piser said the county officer involved in the crash was on duty when the accident occurred.  The police car, an unmarked Ford Taurus, was struck by a Mack dump truck.

Piser said the officer was transporting a prisoner at the time of the crash. Both the officer and prisoner were taken to a nearby hospital.

Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to Piser.

Chris Marsh, operation supervisor with the state's traffic management center, says all northbound traffic was redirected to I-295 while police investigated the crash.

Traffic Services Unit detectives have responded to the scene and are currently conducting an investigation.
