New Castle County police have arrested a Wilmington man who they say fired his gun during a home invasion in Fox Point and later ran from police.

Police identified 23-year-old Ronald Boyce after residents inside the home Wednesday held Boyce down and snapped a photo of his identification with a cellphone, Cpl. Tom Jackson said.

He was arrested Monday in the 500 block of W. 10th St. in Wilmington after running from police and ditching seven bundles of suspected heroin, Jackson said. He was then taken into custody without further incident.

Police were first notified of the crime after they were called at about 11 p.m. Wednesday to Rodney and Rysing drives in the Edgemoor Gardens community, Jackson said. Officers were responding for a shots-fired call, but couldn't locate a shooting scene, he said.

Soon after, they received a phone call from a 39-year-old man who said a man knocked on his door in the first block of N. Rodney Drive, and when he opened it, the man forced his way inside the home, Jackson said. A physical altercation then began, during which the man, later identified as Boyce, pulled out a gun and fired at the resident, he said.

The resident and Boyce continued to fight until residents were able to hold him down and take a picture of his state ID before letting him go, Jackson said. They then turned over the photo to police, he said.

Detectives took over the investigation and were able to locate the gun used in the home invasion, Jackson said. They also began searching for Boyce and later found him Monday, he said.

Boyce was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, home invasion with a weapon, two counts of reckless endangering, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance. The last two charges were added during Boyce's apprehension, Jackson said.

Boyce was taken to Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $148,000.00 cash bail.
