Health Briefs: Imagine Delaware: Combating Diabetes

The News Journal

Join us for the Imagine Delaware: Combating Diabetes vendor fair and panel

Join us for the The News Journal's Imagine Delaware: Combating Diabetes event April 27 at Cab Calloway School of the Arts focused on diabetes in the state, which many health officials warn is near epidemic proportions, mostly because of weight and poor eating habits. But many cases can be controlled if people know they are prediabetic and take control of their diet and exercise.

The event will have two parts: A vendor fair featuring groups that offer healthcare or services to treat diabetics or help people avoid diabetes and then, from 5 to 7 p.m., a panel discussion about the issues facing healthcare, society and individuals because of diabetes.

The vendors will include Christiana Care's diabetes, metabolism, nutrition, blood pressure, school-based services and wound care divisions; Red Clay diet and school nursing services; Medical Society of Delaware's community health program; the Diabetes Coalition of Delaware; Highmark insurance; the American Association of Retired People; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; the state of Delaware Public Health Service; the University of Delaware's Wellness Program; Quality Insights (which will provide a pharmacist to answer questions); the Jefferson County Extension Service's diabetes program; the YMCA and its prediabetes program; Walgreen's; Camp Chiropractic & Eight Weeks to Wellness; the Delaware Medical Reserve Corps Diabetes Self-Management Program; Nemours Children's Health System; Shoprite nutrition services; The Rosa Health Center and more.

Those on the panel will include Dr. Patrice A. Harris, the incoming chairman of the board of the American Medical Association; Dr. James Lenhard, medical director of the Christiana Care Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Disease and medical director of the Christiana Care Weight Management Center; Rita Landgraf, secretary of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, among others; Dr. Jeffrey Burtaine, a medical director in clinical client relations for Highmark; and Chuck Knothe, a Wilmington lawyer who has had diabetes for 15 years.

You can sign up here for tickets. The school is on the bus system for those you would like to use public transportation. Go to https://tickets.delawareonline.com/e/imagine-delaware-series-combating-diabetes for more information.
