Delaware ranks in top 20 states for biggest spenders

Ka-ching is a mantra in Delaware.

Whip out the plastic this holiday season. Delaware is among the top 20 states for spendthrifts, according to a recent study by WalletHub.com. The personal finance site ranked the First State 18th in shopaholics.

The top three were Mississippi, Idaho and New Mexico. Apparently, the most frugal people live in Washington, D.C., apart from Congress, of course.

When WalletHub didn't adjust for income and cost of living, Delaware shot to number nine. The data evaluated personal spending on various categories, including gasoline, housing, health care, vehicles and credit card debt.

For the thrifty among us, WalletHub released a report showing that J.C. Penney is the best retailer for Black Friday deals, with an average discount of a whopping 65 percent. Macy's came in second with a 54 percent discount and Rite Aid took the third slot with 53 percent. Surprisingly, Wal-Mart and Best Buy ranked 18th and 19th respectively, with average discounts of 33 percent. Target inched ahead of both with average discounts of 36 percent.
