3 inches of rain, flight delays, power outages

With a number of trees and wires down as heavy rain continues across Delaware, hundreds of power outages have been reported and travelers are facing flight delays at Philadelphia International Airport.

A number of accidents were reported on rain-slick highways.

By midday Thursday, nearly 2 1/2 inches of rain was measured at this spot in Christiana as light rain continued.

By 8 a.m., the National Weather Service reported 1.84 inches of rain at Sussex County Airport near Georgetown, 1.26 inches at Dover Air Force Base and 0.89 inch at New Castle Airport.

At Cape Henlopen State Park near Lewes, 3 inches of rain was measured, with 2 inches on the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach, according to the Delaware Environmental Observing System website.

Flight delays averaging nearly 2 hours are reported at Philadelphia International Airport, according to the the Federal Aviation Administration's tracking website. The weather service reported 0.62 inch of rain at the airport as of 8 a.m.

More than 370 Delmarva Power customers lost power in the Claymont area south of I-95 and Harvey Road just before 5 a.m. Thursday.

Another 200 customers were out scattered across New Castle County, lower Delaware and nearby Maryland, according to the company's website.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative reports about 50 members without service, mostly in Sussex County.

By 8 a.m. the Delmarva outages were down to 359, and the Co-op had only 10 remaining.

Downed trees were reported at several locations, including in the 1500 block of Whittaker Road near Newark about 6:30 a.m, with wires across the roadway. Whittaker Road was closed in the area near Old Baltimore Pike until utility crews complete repairs.
