Gentry: Ban these three things from the radio

Jeffrey Gentry
The News Journal
Some sounds should not be allowed on the radio.

There are three things that just should not be allowed to be heard on the radio.

Ever. Especially since I mostly listen to the radio when I'm in my truck.

I know what you're thinking.

First, any Justin Bieber song. Yep. I'm right there with you. Second, that "Tardy for the Party" song from Kim Zolciak of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Worst. Song. Ever.

And third, Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy." That song gives me the hives.

Those are all perfectly legitimate candidates to be banned from the radio, but the three things I'm thinking about in this instance are mostly heard in commercials.

So here you go. The three things I think should not be allowed on the radio – and why – are:

The sound of the basic iPhone ring tone. Why ban this from the radio? Because I hear it and immediately start looking for my phone and start saying louder each time, "answer ... ANSwer ... ANSWER" trying to get the Bluetooth speaker thingy to answer the call. Until a voice on the radio then says something like, "Tired of creditors calling you. Need a little cash in your pocket. Then call us today. We can ..." blah, blah, blah. It's almost enough to make me change my ring tone to some KC and The Sunshine Band song. Almost.

The sound of tires screeching and a horn blowing. I can't be the only person who can be driving along just fine, then hears the sound of screeching tires and a horn blowing, and goes into slight panic mode thinking A), I'm about to get hit or B), I'm about to see somebody else get hit. As I hit the brakes and look for a safe swerving spot, I hear over the sound of a crash, "In need of better car insurance? Don't wait until it's too late. Call 302 ..." Seriously. I bet those ads have caused crashes.

And finally, thesound of a siren. I've actually been sitting at a red light in traffic, heard the siren and started to edge to the right so whatever it was could get through. Then I noticed no one else was pulling over and realized it was part of a radio commercial. I guess I was the only one at that light listening to the country station.

Sirens, tires screeching and iPhone ring tones. Let's get them banned from the radio before I end up getting in a crash. Possibly into you. You wouldn't want that, would you?
