Major League Baseball announced Monday night Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon has been suspended seven games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions in Sunday's game at Citizens Bank Park.

Papelbon's suspension is effective immediately, and he will reportedly not appeal the suspension.

Papelbon blew a 4-1 lead in the ninth inning of Sunday's loss to the Miami Marlins, giving up four runs to tie his career high. As he walked off the filed to a chorus of boos, Papelbon grabbed his crotch prompting an ejection by second base umpire Joe West. It sparked a shouting match between Papelbon and two umpires after he sprinted out of the dugout following the ejection. West told a pool reporter after the game he saw Papelbon gesture to the fans with his crotch grab.

"The Phillies fully support the decision of the Commissioner's Office, which has exclusive jurisdiction for on-field player behavior," the team said in a statement. "By Major League Baseball rules, the Phillies have no authority to make official judgments about activity which occurs on the field or to determine the appropriate penalty for misconduct. We apologize to our fans for the actions of our player yesterday."
