Go ahead: Play with your food – build something for the Food Bank

Sign up by Sept. 3 for the Food Bank of Delaware's annual DelawareCAN food drive and structure-building contest. Partly an effort to stock the food bank's shelves before the holidays and partly to raise awareness, the competition lets groups unleash their creativity.

Sign up by Sept. 3 for the Food Bank of Delaware’s annual DelawareCAN food drive and structure-building contest.

The competing organizations are asked to hold food drives, and then build a structure from them. In the past, groups have built trucks, houses, buildings and more from donations. That means deciding in advance what they want to build, and then requesting those items.

In the last three years, more than 100,000 pounds of food have been collected through the competition. Judging takes place Oct. 20 and 21. Christiana Hilton to fill pool with ice Thursday for ALS

Forget dumping a bucket of ice over your head for the ALS challenge: Jump in a pool filled with ice.

The Christiana Hilton Thursday at 5 p.m. will allow people to pay $25 – all proceeds go to ALS – to jump into the pool with like-minded charity supporters. The money will be given to the ALS Association's Greater Philadelphia Chapter, which supports 850 people in the region living with ALS, including 100 in Delaware.

The Hilton is sponsoring the event because Brad Wenger, the general manager, lost his father Ron to ALS in early 2014. For more details, email Bwenger@hiltonestate.com or MGoad@hilstonestate.com.
