Letter: Wilmington, truly a place to be welcomed

WIL

Last week, my friend and I took a mini-tour with an out-of-town guest who wanted to see Wilmington. We stopped at Rockford Park, Brecks Mill, Trolley Square, Brandywine Park and Josephine Gardens, the Train Station, Harriet Tubman Park, the Riverfront and finally a walking tour of downtown.

Our first stop was the Hotel DuPont. We were allowed to show our guest the Green Room prior to the lunch crowd being seated. Even though we knew the Playhouse would be closed, we were graciously given a tour and background information of the beautiful 100-year-old structure.

We made our way down Market Street where everyone on the street, in stores and restaurants, were polite and helpful. We walked by the Delaware Academy of Art and Design, stopped at Govotos Candy Store, pointed out the newest city venue, The World Café at the Queen, passed Delaware Historical Society, the revival of lower Market Street and went into the newly renovated library. Again everyone was happy to answer our questions regarding the new building and explain the changes and new areas available to the public.

The highlight was a Grand Opera House stop. A very nice employee took the time to, not only show us various theaters and studios, but was very knowledgeable of the buildings and eager to inform us of the many programs and opportunities the Grand has to offer.

Despite recent negative reviews, our out-of-town guest came away with a positive view of Wilmington. My friend and I, who both grew up in Wilmington, were happy to rediscover the city we remember.
