A 16-year-old boy was running away from a car he had been in when he was shot Friday night in Bear, county police said Sunday.

Investigators have not yet been able to interview the teen to learn more about the circumstances of the shooting, Officer First Class Tracey Duffy said late Sunday.

The shooting was reported about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Penman Drive and Sandburg Place off Del. 7 near Governors Square.

Officers found the boy lying on the shoulder of Penman Drive, Duffy said.

A 16-year-old boy was shot Friday at the intersection of Penman Drive and Sandburg Place in Bear, New Castle County police said Sunday.

The injured teen was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital.

His injury required surgery, she said, but he was described as stable afterward. Details of his injury, surgery and condition were not disclosed Sunday. Police did not say Sunday where the boy lives.

Witnesses told police they saw a dark-colored sedan pull over along the side of the road, then saw the boy "flee the vehicle but collapse about 20 yards away," Duffy said.

That was when he was shot, she said.

The car then drove off on Penman Drive, heading toward Songsmith Drive, she said.

Police released no other information about the circumstances of the shooting.
