Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a bicyclist who was critically injured.

State Police investigate after a bicyclist was involved in an accident resulting in the bicycle being wedged under a box truck on southbound West Basin Road over I-95 near New Castle early Friday evening.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 7:08 p.m. on Friday as John J. Steelman Jr., 38 of Newark was riding his bicycle southbound in the right lane of Basin Road (SR141) just south of Exit 3A for I95 northbound.  Steelman suddenly entered the left lane in front of a 2015 International box truck which was traveling southbound on SR141 in the left lane.

The truck struck the rear of the bicycle ejecting Steelman into the southbound lanes, before the truck was able to come to a controlled stop.

John Steelman was treated on the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and then transported to Christiana Medical Center by EMS where he was admitted in critical condition.

Warren E. Bullock, 50 of New Castle, was the operator of the box truck and was uninjured in the collision.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into this incident and no charges have been filed.  The area of SR141 and Exit 3A were closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
