A 24-year-old man is in critical condition following Wilmington’s second shooting Saturday near Helen Chambers Park on West Sixth Street, city police said.

Police search in and around Helen Chambers Park at the corner of N. Madison and W. 6th Streets after a shooting Saturday night.

The shooting was reported at about 8:09 p.m. for several rounds fired in the area, Sgt. Andrea Janvier said.

While responding, officers found a vehicle in the 700 block of North Jefferson St. which appeared to be transporting a shooting victim to the hospital, Janvier said.

Police proceeded to escort the vehicle to Wilmington Emergency Room, where a 24-year-old man was removed from the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest, she said.

Medics were able to stabilize the man before transporting him to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, she added.

A shooting scene was later established in the 600 block of W. Sixth St. and police are investigating the scene, Janvier said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Criminal Investigation unit at (302) 576-3620.

The area around the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center across the street from Helen Chambers Park has been wrought with gun violence over the past six months, with seven shootings occurring less than a block away from the center in the past six months.

The shooting numbers continue to grow in the surrounding neighborhood near the center.

Earlier Saturday, a 60-year-old man was shot in the head in the 1200 block on Vandever Avenue.

He was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics before he was rushed to Christiana Hospital, where he was described in stable condition, Sgt. Andrea Janvier said.

Police did not release any information about a suspect, but asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective Randy Knoll at (302) 576-3620.
