A man was shot Tuesday on Wilmington's west side and had to undergo emergency surgery, police said.

The 36-year-old was shot about 1:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Lancaster Ave. near the Lancaster Discount Liquor Store, Master Sgt. Donald Bluestein said.

He was taken to Christiana Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Bluestein said, adding Tuesday evening that detectives had not yet been able to interview him.

In the meantime, Bluestein said, they were using "other avenues ... to piece together the events surrounding the shooting."

With the investigation still in preliminary stages, no suspect information or details were available Tuesday night.

Tuesday's incident is the city's 72nd shooting and the 77th victim – 19 of them fatal.
