A man was shot in the leg Friday night in Wilmington, city police said.

Reports of shots fired and a number of subjects armed with knives and guns shortly after 10:30 p.m. sent police to the first block of N. Franklin St.

The injured man was conscious and alert when he was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, Sgt. Malcolm Stoddard said at the scene.

A witness reported seeing a man running on nearby Pleasant Street just after the gunfire, but police had no suspect description.

Still in the early stage of investigation, Stoddard said after 11 p.m. that police had not determined whether the shooting occurred in a house, in a car or on the street.

Nor did they have any details yet of the circumstances of the shooting.

Many bystanders stood on sidewalks and porches near the block of row houses, cordoned with yellow plastic tape and blockaded by police cars with lights flashing.

But none in the immediate area who would talk to a reporter said they saw or heard the shooting.
